Rooftops
Rooftop in Bangkok: the most beautiful sky bars in the city
Bangkok comes into its own at sunset, from a rooftop. The silhouettes of the temples and the towers, the heat gently dissipating, the first drink at dusk — a few addresses know perfectly how to set this moment. You still have to choose the right roof.
The concept: top 3
Three rooftops, selected for their elegance and their romance rather than their altitude alone. An exceptional panorama is not enough to create a lovely evening — the atmosphere, the service and the quality of the cocktails count as much as the metres above the ground.
We set aside the crowded terraces and the "tourist" rooftops where you essentially pay for the selfie. Our selection favours the addresses where the care given to the setting and the experience fully justifies the detour — and often the price.
The rooftop scene in Bangkok evolves fast. We update our selection at the rhythm of openings and closures, personally testing every new address that lays claim to this level.
What we look for
The view, of course, but with real added value: an angle on the Chao Phraya, a sweep over the roofs of old Bangkok, or a perspective on the nocturnal skyline that gives a sense of belonging to the city rather than a mere postcard.
The atmosphere: the light of the sunset well exploited, the music at a volume that allows conversation, the comfort of the seating, the visual coherence of the place. These details, invisible in a photo, make all the difference in reality.
Service worthy of the panorama and the prices — for a beautiful view is not enough to make a beautiful evening. Trained, responsive teams able to steer you towards one cocktail rather than another depending on the moment: that is what we test.
The neighbourhoods of the best rooftops
The Riverside (the banks of the Chao Phraya) offers the most spectacular views over the river, the temples and the illuminated bridges. It is the most romantic — and most photographed — sector of the Bangkok skyline.
Silom and Sathorn, the districts of office towers in the south of Bangkok, offer the greatest altitudes and the most open panoramas over the city and its nocturnal lights. The density of rooftops there is high; some sorting is necessary.
Sukhumvit, in its middle and upper parts (soi 24 to soi 55), offers more modern rooftops, often attached to boutique hotels or private clubs, with a clientele more local and international than tourist.
The right time to go
The golden hour, between 5.30pm and 7pm depending on the season, is the ideal moment for Bangkok's rooftops. The sun sinks behind the towers, the lights begin to come on and the heat of the day gives way. The best rooftops organise their offering around this moment — arriving too early or too late often means missing the essential.
The cool season (November to February) is clearly the best period. Temperatures at sunset drop to 25-28 degrees, making the terraces genuinely pleasant. In April and May (the peak of the heat), the pleasure is more measured, even in the evening.
Weekdays are generally less busy than weekends, and the atmosphere more relaxed. For special occasions, a weekend with an advance booking is a must — the best rooftops are often fully booked on Saturday evening.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a dress code at Bangkok's rooftops? Yes, at most of the establishments in our selection: smart casual minimum, no flip-flops or shorts. Some are stricter in the evening. Check before setting out.
Should you book? Strongly advised, especially for sunset and on Saturday. Some rooftops require a minimum spend in exchange for a table with a view — a detail to check when booking.
Are Bangkok's rooftops suitable for children? Generally not, especially in the evening. Most are adult spaces, with alcohol service and a nightlife atmosphere from 9pm. A few daytime terraces are an exception.
