Italian restaurants
Italian restaurant in Bangkok: authenticity above all
Italy is recognised by its simplicity: the right product — a burrata, fresh pasta, a slice of quality ham — masterful cooking and nothing superfluous. That is what we look for in Bangkok, in a city nonetheless saturated with restaurants claiming the heritage of the peninsula.
The concept: top 3
Three addresses, no more. The ones that respect Italian tradition without caricaturing it, that work with real produce — often imported directly from Italy — and whose kitchens hold their rank over time.
From fresh pasta made every morning to carefully prepared antipasti, we look for the house where a demanding Italian would feel at home, with no concession to local taste or to the expectations of generalist guides.
Bangkok has more Italian establishments than most European capitals. Our task is precisely to find the rare houses where Italy truly exists — rather than pointing to every fashionable opening.
What we look for
The quality of the produce, often imported from Italy: cured meats, DOP cheeses, flour for the pasta, tinned tomatoes, extra-virgin olive oil. The origin of the produce is felt on the plate — and verified in the kitchen.
The accuracy of the cooking and the sincerity of the recipes, without showing off or gratuitous creativity. A perfect spaghetti alle vongole is always worth more than a fusion creation that muddies the waters.
A cellar conceived to accompany the table — wines from Tuscany, Piedmont, Sicily, Campania — and a service that knows its dishes and can advise without hesitation.
Why Bangkok for Italian cuisine?
The Italian community in Bangkok is large and demanding. It has driven the emergence of several serious houses that supply their kitchens directly through specialised importers, sometimes the same ones as the great restaurants of Europe.
The Sathorn district and the surroundings of Sukhumvit hold the highest concentration of quality Italian restaurants. Some are institutions known for decades; others are recent openings set up by Italians living in Bangkok.
The Bangkok heat sometimes changes the perception of wines and cheeses. The best tables factor this into their selection and their pairings — a sign of maturity that we particularly appreciate.
The essentials of the Italian table
Fresh pasta, made in-house that very morning, is the first marker of seriousness. Tagliatelle, pappardelle, tortellini, ravioli: their texture and their taste immediately betray the rigour — or its absence — of the kitchen.
The antipasti — bruschetta, cured meats, burrata, marinated vegetables — are a restaurant's calling card. They speak to the quality of the produce and the attention given to cold preparations, often neglected.
Risotto, when it appears on the menu, is a revealing test: creamy, served in a warm dish, with a good-quality stock. A risotto that is too dry or too liquid reveals a kitchen that has not mastered its basics.
Frequently asked questions
Are Bangkok's Italian restaurants faithful to genuine Italian cuisine? The three we recommend: yes. Many others adapt their recipes to local taste — less garlic, less acidity, different portions. It is not necessarily bad, but it is no longer Italian cuisine.
Should you book? For our selected addresses, yes — especially in the evening and at the end of the week. Some serve only a few covers and are often fully booked several days in advance.
Are there vegetarian options in these restaurants? Yes, Italian cuisine lends itself naturally to vegetarian variations — vegetable pasta, risotti, burrata, antipasti. The three houses in our selection offer serious alternatives.
